Description
The Central Cascade in Watkins Glen, dwarfed by the surrounding cliffs. The park first opened for public viewing as a private tourism attraction in 1863, in the midst of the US Civil War. It became state property in the early 1900s, and many of the trails bridges and tunnels were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Extensive work must be done each spring to make the gorge trail safe for public use, replacing steps damaged by ice and frost, clearing rock falls from land slides, and removing fallen trees.
