Description
The Graves Lighthouse nine miles outside Boston is the first light as you approach the Harbor, and the tallest light in the Boston area. Built in 1905 it stands 113 feet and when constructed held a Fresnel lens. With a long history of service it was automated in 1976, and provided with solar power (some of the collectors are visible) in 2001. The Graves Ledge name origin is lost to history, but according to various sources it may be named for a British Admiral or an American Merchant from the Colonial era. Given the ferocity with which waves can crash over the rocks and the height of the light itself, it is easy to imagine a different origin as well.
