Part of a chain of forts along the Texas Frontier to extend American power into the Great Plains and combat Plains Indian Nations was withdrawn from by US Army forces early in 1861, occupied by Texas State forces, and used as a PoW camp. Following the end of the Civil War it was again occupied by US Army regulars including elements of at least two of the Buffalo Soldier regiments.
