Artist's Description

�Life� reaches forth from the tumult of war, as seen in this sculpture by Charles Adrian Pillars. The City of Jacksonville and its Rotary Club created this statue and park following the First World War, to remember the 1200 Floridians who gave their lives, to �Make the world safe for democracy� as President Woodrow Wilson put it. The park itself was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, providing Jacksonville with an important cultural site in the 20s and 30s. Now, as the city has grown it has become in many ways a neighborhood park, where children play, and health classes meet, not focusing on the losses of a century ago, in a world that while not "safe for democracy", perhaps safer for democracy.

Joshua House

Joshua House has been described as a photographer, a conservationist, a historian, and an adventurer. Having traveled and worked extensively across the country he is currently concentrating his photographic work in Eastern Texas, centered on Houston. His past creative work has included research, writing, and photography for the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Illinois, Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska, and Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado. As a conservationist he has worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the National Park Service.
