Artist's Description
As a major world city Houston Texas has cultural elements from around the globe. One of the ways that Houston has incorporated other cultures into its fabric is the Japanese Garden within Hermann Park. The garden itself is a gift from individuals and corporations to the City of Houston and is focused around a Tea House that was given to the City of Houston by the former Japanese Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu in 1990 during the World Economic Summit that was held in Houston. The gardens construction was begun the following year and was completed in 1992, having been designed by Ken Nakajima. Around the Tea House are traditional Japanese elements, including the tsukubai, mizukoto, and niwakido. The garden itself includes several Japanese stone lanterns, including two given by Houstons sister city Chiba. Additionally, the ponds and many of the plants are either of Japanese origin or influenced by Japanese concepts.
