Description
The home of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield Illinois. Lincoln bought this house while he and Mary were still newlyweds, three of their sons were born here, and sadly Eddie died here. While Abe and Mary owned the house they expanded it several times, adding the rear portion of the house, and the second story among other improvements. Abraham Lincoln never returned to this house after having assumed the Presidency, because of his assassination in 1865. None of the family lived in the house following President Lincoln's death, and Robert Todd Lincoln (the eldest son and only son to survive to adulthood) eventually donated it to the State of Illinois. In 1972 the House was transferred to the National Park Service, which eventually purchased the four surrounding blocks in downtown Springfield creating the current Lincoln Home National Historic Site.
